Dr. Theresa Reed is a licensed clinical psychologist in the state of VA. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from James Madison University and went on to earn her doctorate in Clinical Psychology (Psy.D) from the American School of Professional Psychology, which is an APA accredited institution. She specializes in child and family therapy. She completed her predoctoral training at the Village for Families and Children in Hartford, Connecticut where she was trained in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
Dr. Reed offers individual, family and couples’ therapy to individuals of all walks of life including children, adolescents, and adults. She specializes in trauma, grief/loss, relational concerns, anxiety, depression, and problems pertaining to self-image. In addition, she has significant experience working with children who have symptoms of ADHD, school refusal, and developmental delays.
Dr. Reed works from an eclectic theoretical approach and believes each individual is unique and benefits from a therapeutic approach that is tailored towards their personal needs and goals. She incorporates training in many schools of thought to include psychoanalytical approaches, cognitive-behavioral techniques and family system dynamics. The psychoanalytic component of Dr. Reed’s work allows clients to become more aware of unconscious or subconscious aspects of themselves and address problematic patterns such as ineffective decision-making or interpersonal difficulties. Cognitive-behavioral work is geared towards helping clients develop more adaptive ways of perceiving themselves or others and teaches them skills to help them cope more effectively with life circumstances. This work allows individuals to develop their authentic self and to feel more confident in their ability to handle daily stressors. An emphasis is placed on developing greater self-esteem and building confidence to be able to manage symptoms associate with mental health difficulties.
Dr. Reed has worked in a variety of settings, including community mental health, hospitals, and private practice. She values her work with each individual and is committed to his or her success in the therapy process. Dr. Reed is open to providing a more structured format for treatment or can facilitate process-oriented sessions to help individuals gain greater self-awareness. These specific needs can be openly addressed with her throughout sessions and feedback is greatly appreciated.
Additionally, Dr. Reed has been trained in administering psychological assessments to assist with diagnostic clarification and to provide recommendations for treatment approaches. Dr. Reed has administered neuropsychological tests for Children’s National Medical Center and has assisted with placement testing for private/public schools.
